Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide Safety

Since there seems to be conflicting information available as to the safety of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, I asked Paul Lieber, cosmetic chemist for Royal Labs and developer of the Aroma Bella and Deep Steep product lines for his opinion. Paul has been creating natural products for over 20 years and he started down this road when he couldn't find any natural products for his own personal use that were in fact natural without harmful ingredients.

Dr F: What is your opinion on titanium dioxide and zinc oxide? There seems to be some conflicting information about their safety. Many companies who produce natural products use them and they say they’re safe and then there are some companies out there who believe they’re not safe and that they’re absorbed through the skin.

PL: I haven’t read of anything that’s detrimental to using them. Both of them are minerals. They’re purified and there are no toxic levels of lead and other toxic metals in them. A Certificate of Analysis sheet comes with all the ingredients and the certificate of analysis will give you the different levels of other ingredients that are within the zinc and titanium … I have not heard or seen any studies that suggest that using them is not good.

NOTE: Much of the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide used today is micronized or nano sized. For more information, see the articles page in the member area for articles on titanium dioxide, micronized and nanoparticles. This is going to be a hot topic for many years to come.
